History has borne witness to man’s desire to travel and discover new lands. But in his wake man has left a trail of destructions. The only saving grace is that while man can destroy, he is also the only one who can protect. Uttrakhand endorses the growing concern for preservation of natural habitat and eco system and is committed to preserve and protect the Himalayas eco- heritage. Efforts made by the state in this regard have been duly appreciated by the Government of India by conferring on Uttrakhand the National Tourism Award for tourism promotion in international year of eco tourism.

Introduction of Uttrakhand:
India along with Uttrakhand Tourism Development Board urges all to savour and save the natural beauty of this land of Gods – Devbhumi through sustainable tourism. Uttrakhand where Ganga, Yamuna and scores of rivers and rivulets are seen in their blissful infancy. It remains a constant source of spiritual attainment for Hindus and Sikhs, drawing pilgrims seeking-realization and Moksha from all over the world. Uttrakhand has that galaxy of peaks and glaciers, meadows and jungles and that wealth of colorful valleys and dales that have no parallel on earth. There is a lot that one can learn and discover in Uttrakhand. On the one hand, the devotionally adorned temples with their pinnacles soaring into the cosmic blue tend to heighten in humanity the ecstatic sense of closeness to the Absolute one and even complete surrender to the Almighty. And on the other hand frozen lakes, majestic waterfall, meandering rivers, undulating meadows, incredible mountains and rich flora and fauna provide a glorious panorama to soothe and invigorate those fatigued from the hectic life of urban rush. Then there is the innocent, friendly hill-man waiting with a welcome that is rich in all his simplicity and innocence
The magic of this land of wisdom and wonders is not to be said and read, it is to be seen and felt. The real glory remains conspicuously unsung, since the task of reducing it to words appears to be beyond anyone. Is it the land of Gods, a museum of rare flora and fauna, or the image of ignorance and simplicity? To the seeker it is land promising the ultimate answer, a rewarding pilgrimage that may come once and over again, or even a study tour that offer unlimited scope for research and potential for discoveries within and without.
Geographical description of Uttrakhand:
There are total 13 district.
Population (as per census 2011):- 1,01,16,752
Latitude & Longitude: 28°42’N-31°28’ and 77°35’E-81°5’
Length: East-West 358km
Width: North-South 320km
Well basically the Uttrakhand is divided into two regional parts or called mandals. These two mandals are
1. Garhwal Mandal or Garhwal region
2. Kumaon Mandal or Kumaon region
v Garhwal Region (Western Half) consists of 7 district i.e Haridwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Pauri, Chamoli, Rudrprayag.
v Kumaon Region (Eastern Part) consists of 6 district i.e Alomar, Bageshwar, Champawat, Nanital, Pithoragarh, Udham Singh Nagar.
First we will discusses about Garhwal region and then later we discusses about Kumaon region.
Glaciers: Some of the Glaciers lying in the region:
Khatling, Nanda Devi, Gangotri ,Milam, Pindari, Ralam, Sundardunga, Kalphni etc.
Peaks: Gangotri (6614m), Nandadevi (7816m), Nandakot (6202m), Kamet (7756m), Srikant (6728m), Doonagiri (7066m), Latoodhare (6348m) etc.
Garhwal region start from Haridwar, Rishekesh . We will discusses about this in next post.
